DIVERSEcity Community Resources Society (DIVERSEcity) has secured an Arts Engagement grant from the Provincial Government to create a made-in Surrey Mural, a digital art design for a vinyl installation (888.50” width x172” height).

The Multicultural Mural Community Project aims to establish a mural which represents Surrey’s cultural, ethnic, linguistic and religious diversity through the collaboration of community members from diverse backgrounds or perspectives, including youth, seniors, new immigrants and refugees.

Upon the closing of Call for Expression of Intereston on November 10, DIVERSEcity will host Focus Group sessions and encourage participate (Youth and Seniors, New immigrants and/or refugee, people who speak English as a second language, people who do not have art experience) input in November to December, and draft mural design would be avable by mid February 2012. Final mural design will be ready by end of April 2012.

This community project will engage a diverse group of local Surrey residents to develop a mural design that is representative of the social, cultural, ethnic, linguistic and religious diversity of their community. Project participants will provide the necessary input into the creation of the mural design that will reflect their idea of a welcoming and inclusive community. This input will be gathered through focus group sessions facilitated by the project coordinator. The contracted digital artist will create the design based on participants’ input and ideas from these focus group sessions.

The Project Planning Committee is comprised of project partners: City of Surrey, Arts Council of Surrey, Anthem Properties and DIVERSEcity.

The City of Surrey will make a set of 3 street banners from the mural design and it will be placed throughout theNewton town center.

The first focus group meeting will take place on December10.
